Dear Friends and Family,

As you may know, the island of Cuba is a land ravaged by economic inequality and poverty. What is more, the 1960 embargo between the United States and Cuba prevents donations and aid from being sent directly from America to the island. Unfortunately for the Cuban people, this means that items that we, as Americans, take for granted, such as cooking utensils, aspirin, and new shoes are scarce and are seen as luxuries in Cuba.

In response to this disparity, The Fiedler Hillel Center at Northwestern University sponsors an annual trip to the island that sends twenty to thirty students to Cuba each Spring. This trip is legal and approved by both the U.S. and Cuba due to the fact that we operate under a religious license visa. Each traveler brings suitcases filled with upwards of 60 pounds of supplies, medicine, and Judaica which we then hand-deliver to several synagogues which operate free private medical clinics and pharmacies in Havana. The synagogues that we have relationships with include El Patronato-la Casa de la Comunidad Hebrea de Cuba, Centro Sefaradi, and Adath Israel.

The 2011 mission was an overwhelming success and altogether the group brought more than 3,500 lbs. of aid to Cuba. This year we hope to surpass that amount but it will not be possible without the financial support of organizations and individuals like you. Your donation will go specifically toward buying and bringing aid and making direct cash donations to the community that welcomes us with open arms each year. I invite you to join our effort to help the Cuban-Jewish community and I urge you to donate to the 2012 Cuba ASB mission.

Thank you in advance for you consideration.

Sincerely,

The Northwestern Hillel Cuba ASB 2012 Team
