The Solstice Run is collaboration between On The Ground and Endurance Evolution, to raise money and build awareness for education in Ethiopia. The run will begin at sunset on Thursday, June 20th in beautiful Leelanau County. It will continue south through the night, approximately 40 miles, ending at sunrise over the breathtaking Lake Michigan in Traverse City.

The funds raised will be used to complete the construction of a library in Hase Gola, Ethiopia. Funds will also supply age-appropriate literacy materials for learning to read and health-related educational materials such as information on AIDS and typhoid. The Hase Gola Library will also offer a meeting and centralized space for community issues.

What is it?
The Solstice Run is an ultra-run, starting at sunset, continuing 40 miles south along the Leelanau Peninsula until sunrise. This is all about fun and adventure – it’s not a race. It also has transpired to training for Run Across Ethiopia and Run Across Palestine participants. The annual runs have occurred during both the summer and winter solstices, ranging from 30-39 miles during the shortest days and shortest nights of the year. For some this will be the first of their Solstice Runs, for others it may be their IV!

The Run offers three options:

  • The whole shebang - 40 miles
  • Two half-Solstice options (Begin with the group in Northport, or join at the midway point and end in Traverse City) – 20 miles
  • Four-person relay – You and three other friends each run a 10 mile leg

Following the run, join fellow participants in a post-run celebration on the beach and a dip in the lake during sunrise.

Why?
The Solstice Run is to raise funds and awareness for OTG’s Project Ethiopia. Project Ethiopia is currently building a library in the community of Hase Gola. On The Ground is in the last stages of fundraising to reach the goal needed to start construction. Participating runners are asked to raise $1000 each.

When is it?
The Solstice Run will take place at sunset, Thursday, June 20th, 2013 (approximately 9:30pm) and continue until sunrise (approximately 9:30am) on Friday, June 21st, 2013. Participating runners will have a 12 hour time limit to finish the 40 miles. (That’s a minimum pace of about 18 minutes per mile)

Where is it?
The Solstice Run will commence at North Lighthouse Point (the northernmost point of Michigan’s Leelanau Peninsula) and will travel 40 miles south along the west shore of Grand Traverse Bay, coming to an end at the beach of Clinch Park in Traverse City, Michigan.
