On October 10, 2015, my son and I will be running our second ever half marathon. Last year, we ran to raise funds for a group that works to prevent teen suicide after the son of a friend took his life. This year, I wanted to put in the miles and effort to help another cause, and the one that was crying out for help was the refugee crisis in Europe. I'd like for the money to go to a small NGO on the Greek island of Lesvos, which is on the frontlines of the crisis. I'll communicate that to the IRC but ultimately they will make the call about where the money is needed most and where it can help the most. I've chosen the IRC because it allocates 92 percent of what NGOs call "expenses" directly to providing services. And its CEO draws no salary, unlike other CEOs of NGOs who earn six-figure incomes that start with a four or five.
Give generously!!! Suggested contributions: $1 for every mile I run is a $13 contribution. $1 for every mile Luca AND I run is $26. If you add the training miles I'll be doing between now and the race, that's another 100+ miles. Remember - the IRC uses most of the funds to provide services.
Anyone running the Brooklyn Half Marathon that's part of the Rock 'n' Roll series of races is welcome to join the team.
