The NJYS Playathon is the brain-child of Barbara Barstow who in 1983 returned from an American Symphony League conference with the idea of gathering all of the musicians of NJYS together and performing a full-day marathon concert at Woodbridge Mall to raise money for the organization’s many needs. The first Playathon at Woodbridge Mall was such a huge success. Both students and families clamored for multiple Playathon events throughout the year. However, what did evolve was a no-holds-barred Playathon to be held each season that would include every musician from the very youngest to the oldest. Have you ever seen 100 musicians performing together? How about 200? How about 400? It’s not something you expect to see everyday.
Over the course of the next 20 years, the event grew as the organization grew. Due to its size, both in student participation and in record-breaking audiences, it was relocated to the Jersey Gardens Mall where this season’s event will take place on February 3, 2012. On this day around noon, all 400 musicians of NJYS will gather to perform several popular orchestral works in a show of solidarity in support of music education. There is rarely a dry-eye in the mall. It is something truly awesome seeing and hearing 400 young people performing together. At once, you will realize many things about young people, about their abilities (you will be surprised), what can be accomplished with passion and commitment, how important music education is, and how the world is a better place because of this program.
