The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) is dedicated to cultivating young exemplary leadership in our community. As a component of its ongoing commitment to youth, NBJC has developed theBlack LGBT Emerging Leaders Initiative. The Black LGBT Emerging Leaders Initiative provides a platform and forum for young rising stars (ages 18-30) to elevate and address the concerns of Black LGBT young adults, share best practices as well as have a seat at the table to not only be mentored by seasoned advocates and elders, but to also lead and offer invaluable insight. The Emerging Leader perspective is critical to shaping policies for the future. Their active involvement is essential to help grow the leadership pipeline necessary to sustain a vibrant and impactful equality movement. NBJC’s Emerging Leaders will be exposed to opportunities such as educating key policymakers and influencers on Black LGBT priority issues, and learning the fundamentals of how our democracy works.
From urban streets to suburban schoolyards, African American LGBT youth are some of our nation’s most vulnerable, yet they are often the most overlooked. Most research examines this community in silos (as either Black or LGBT), disregarding the depth and value of their experience as double (often times triple and quadruple) minorities. The staggering void of statistics of youth at the intersection of African descent and LGBT identities only illuminates the need for visibility and to bring recognition to this population identity.
