Our club, Mile High Rowing Club (MHRC), is Denver's only youth rowing club. It began in 2008, and has grown to more than 50 young women and men athletes from area middle and high schools. Our rowers practice at Cherry Creek Reservoir and race at a competitive level at local, regional and national events. The club is coached by an international rowing champion, Grace Malacrida.

The sport of rowing is beneficial to our youth is so many ways. Rowing is really hard work. To do it well requires great physical strength, endurance, and skill. Rowing also requires team work. Our rowers need to work together, in absolute unison, in order to effectively and quickly move the boat. And that's just on the water. Hard work and teamwork also come into play off the water. To prepare for regattas, the rowers have to rig and de-rig the boats, and load and unload them from the trailer. A sweep boat for eight is on average 62 feet long, so this can be quite a task! Lastly, rowing demands dedication. Our rowers practice for two hours, five days a week - rain or shine. But rowing is also a beautiful sport, and they all have a great time out on the water! The work ethic and habits the rowers will take away from these experiences will benefit them into college and far beyond.

MHRC is growing quickly! As a result, our equipment is in need of repair and upgrading. The club needs new boats and a new trailer to transport the boats to regattas. A new boat can cost anywhere between $12,000 for a rowing pair, to $30,000 for a rowing eight. And that doesn't even include oars, which are $500 a piece! A new trailer costs $20,000.

On Saturday, November 14th, MHRC is hosting an ergathon, which is essentially a race on rowing machines. Here is how the ergathon will work. The rowers will be divided into teams of eight. Each team will then collectively row a marathon, which is approximately 42,000 meters, with team members alternating every 1000 meters. The goal is to complete the marathon in as fast a time as possible!

In order to meet our fundraising goal, we are asking friends, families and fans of rowing to make a donation to this event. No amount is too small - all donations will be great appreciated!
