On March 8 this year our beautiful son Xavier Edward Perusse died as a result of complications from Gaucher Disease. While this has been a heartbreaking journey for our family, our lives have been forever changed by knowing Xavier and he lives on in our hearts. We will be training for and running a half marathon in October-- which is Gaucher Awareness month and also Xavier's birthday month (October 11)! Half of the funds we raise will go to support Gaucher Disease Research (Children's Gaucher Research fund) and half will go to support Bay Area children with terminal illness (Jacob's Heart). Xavier was a strong little boy with a heart-melting smile, who started having health difficulties at the age of 3 months. The doctors could not figure out his diagnosis for many months despite numerous tests, and months spent in the ICU. Xavier was ultimately diagnosed with Gaucher Type 2, a fatal, fast progressing neurodegenerative disease with an average lifespan of 9 mohths. We were blessed to have him with us for 17 months. Every moment with Xavier was a blessing. His life was short but he impacted more people in his 17 months than most do in a lifetime. He has been an incredible inspiration to our family and community, and we can only hope to provide a legacy to Xavier that does justice to the great love and compassion that he inspired in the hearts of those around him.
