Hello and thanks for stopping by my page!

My name is Sandy. I'm currently in Superior, Wisconsin as part of my service as an AmeriCorps*VISTA. I will be running in this year's Grandma's Marathon and hope to use this opportunity to raise awareness and support the initiatives of the Upper Midwest Neurofibromatosis (NF) organization. As someone with NF1, I want to support that an organization that has so much heart for families in the area.

I decided to start running "for a cause" after reading about a brave boy who battled a cancerous brain tumor. This specific story to be exact: http://wsnfsupport.org/sherod-nichols-article/

It sparked something in me that I didn't know existed. I began to read NF materials, and discovered the Children's Tumor Foundaion NF Endurance team. I already ran, but now I wanted to finish a half marathon, for the simple fact that I could. I wanted to discover the limits of my body. I dreamed about pushing myself and appreciating every part of my body, because with NF, you never know. That's the scary part, and I want to make sure that I've love every moment of strength and health that I have.

I ran my first race in 2010. I ended up being too sick to run the half, so I dropped to a 5k. Although I was disappointed, I still had the opportunity to have an amazing experience. I met amazing people at a pre-race dinner. We shared stories, and for the first time, I met others other than my father will the disease. I remember meeting someone who had the goal of running a marathon after surgery for a brain tumor. Then there was yet another...someone who ran after multiple surgeries to remove tumors on his legs. I was so inspired by their dedication and positive outlook. The Mini Indy changed my life.

My hope is that raising funds for Upper Midwest NF will support family support, lobbying efforts and scholarships to NF camp. Having a network of friends would give parents support they need. Lobbying support will ensure that there is federal funding for NF-related research.

***I am also organizing a pre-race event those affected by NF and their family and friends. During this event, there will be a story-sharing, support and a start of some new friendships. It will be a great way to feel that energy and motivation to start the race on Saturday***

Please consider supporting the team either by running, joining the fundraising team or a donation to take us one step closer to a cure for NF! I hope you can walk (or run) this journey with me, metaphorically or literally!

I was given the goal of $500, so naturally, that means my goal is $613:).
