Operation Rainbow's mission is to bring free surgical care to impoverished children around the globe. We specialize in orthopedic intervention to correct congenital deformities such as clubfeet, polio deformities, and other orthopedic problems that go untreated in developing countries such as Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and Peru. In over 3 decades, Operation Rainbow volunteers have helped more than 12,000 children in eleven nations. The goal of a mission is to treat as many patients as possible with the available equipment. Prior to the mission, the team packs all supplies needed to set up operating rooms, from sutures to instruments to implants and casting materials. We work alongside local medical personnel to share knowledge. After our mission the local physicians take reaponsibility for the post-operative care. The e effect is amazing! Many of these children were shunned or simply unable to perform daily tasks. Now they can. And they can go to school and become employed. They are able to transition from being burdens on their community to becoming contributing members. A typical mission costs about $30,000 in supplies and logistics with volunteers contributing for their own housing and airfare. Volunteers donate their time off from work and family, hard labor, but most of all LOVE.
