Only 48% of Los Angeles' high school youth are "proficient" in English & Language Arts. Our creative writing workshops will help now!

The DSTL Arts—Literary Arts Champions believe in, and advocate for, the young, creative writers we mentor through our Arts Mentorship Program and their parents/guardians/older community members.

The money we raise will be used to establish and sustain weekly creative writing workshops for at-risk youth, ages 16–21 years old and their parents/guardians. This funding will pay for creative writing supplies, including the publishing of two quarterly 'zines, "Art Block" and "Conchas y Café," which our program participants will present and read from at local venues throughout Los Angeles.

Students who participate in our Arts Mentorship Program qualify for our services by meeting at least one of three following eligibility criteria:

  1. Low Income
  2. Physical or Learning Disability
  3. Current or Former Foster Youth

Other "at-risk" indicators may be considered during enrollment. Only students between the ages of 16–21 years old may apply.

Student enrollment in creative writing mentorships, and participation in our "Art Block" 'zine workshops, is limited to 15 students per year/publishing cycle.

Parents/Guardians participate in our "Conchas y Café" creative writing workshops, where creative writing exercises and literacy lessons are conducted in both English and Spanish, creating a nurturing atmosphere of inclusivity and community. "Conchas y Café" enrollment is limited to 15 participants per publishing cycle.
