The DSACO Buddy Walk and Inaugural Run for T21 5K will be held on October 19, 2013 at the Bricktown Ballpark. This year we expect attendance at our walk and 5K to exceed 5,000!

(Please note cost to run in the Run for T21 5K is $30 and registration MUST be completed at https://www.signmeup.com/site/online-event-registration/93969)

The Down syndrome awareness walk and 5K gives the association and our families the chance to raise awareness about Down syndrome and is also one of the main fundraising events for the Down Syndrome Association of Central Oklahoma. The majority of the monies raised will stay in the central Oklahoma area to fund the various activities and programs supported by DSACO.

The event is open to the public. The 5K will begin at 8 a.m. and the awareness walk fun begins at 9:00 a.m. at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Activities will include raffles, moon bounces, petting zoo, games, music, and much more! At noon, all attendees will walk one lap around the block outside the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark to show their support for acceptance and inclusion for people with Down syndrome.

All proceeds raised from the awareness walk and 5K will benefit the Down Syndrome Association of Central Oklahoma, as well as the families the organization serves.

We accomplish these goals through a number of programs including:

• Kylee’s Kitchen (teen & self-advocate microwave-based cooking classes for independent living)

• Learning Lab & Tutoring Center

• Family and Teen/Adult Social Events

• Quarterly printed newsletter and monthly e-Newsletter

• New Parent Packets and Quarterly Breakfast

• Parent to Parent Support Groups

• Reaching Across the Plains Annual Conference (for any parent of a child with a disability)

• Scholarships for families and self-advocates to attend national Down syndrome conferences

• Workshops featuring local & national speakers on topics relating to Down syndrome

It is our goal in 2014 to start new programs such as:

• Teen and Adult Social Lounge that includes age appropriate activities enabling teens and adults with Down syndrome to meet and socialize and create life-long friendships as many of their peers do at this age

• Smart Start Kindergarten Readiness Program that will prepare families for the challenges they may face as their child enters into the public education system

• Zumba and Yoga classes taught by certified instructors to encourage healthy lifestyles

These programs are contingent upon reaching our 2013 Awareness Walk & 5K fundraising goal of $150,000.
