Your donation will help Holding Our Own continue to bring you She Breathes the only community-based feminist blog in the region, to kick off a Young Women in Philanthropy project creating a pipeline of young leaders to feminist social justice futures, and to magnify the voices of feminists and womanists across the region through our network of activists, advocates and non-profit leaders.

About Holding Our Own

Holding Our Own, Inc., the women’s foundation of New York State’s Capital Region, was established in 1982 to create and advance feminist social and economic change. As a multiracial, multicultural foundation led by women of color, HOO occupies a unique position among New York’s Capital Region’s philanthropic, advocacy, and social justice organizations. We form a bridge linking many directions: connecting the various communities of color, the philanthropic community and social change work; between heterosexual and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities, and predominantly white led and predominantly people of color led organizations.

In 2013, generous support from our donors and supporters made awesome things happen! They helped:

  • Continue to build and nurture a network of local feminist advocates and activists from a broad spectrum of community organizations, grassroots movements, local universities, and non-profits. The network provides spaces to connect and collaborate, to host skill-shares, leverage resources, and support the growth of women-identified feminist leaders from the grassroots up!

  • Establish a new donor-advised fund, the Sanctuary Fund.
The Sanctuary Fund is a loan/grant fund established to finance security deposits to women and families in our community who find they need to leave their homes without notice. This could be as a result of a disaster, a divorce, domestic violence or any other emergent need. The definition of "sanctuary" speaks for itself. The fund benefits women and their families who do not have access to other sources of support. You can check out the facebook page here:https://www.facebook.com/sanctuaryfund or read about it on the website here:www.holdingourownonline.org/the-sanctuary-fund.

  • Maintain the Women's Building at 373 Central Avenue in Albany, NY, one of only a few remaining stand-alone women-run and women-owned feminist community centers in the US. When community space is needed, we are always there.

  • Inject feminism, with an economic and racial justice focus, into local political dialogue. Building on the Feminism, Politics, Power series kicked off last summer we hosted two candidate forums--Albany City Mayoral Candidate Forum and Albany County Family Court Judge Forum this past July.

  • Kick off She Breathes, the only community-based feminist blog in the region.

Help us do even more in 2014!!! :)
