Our Goals:

We want to continue doing what we are doing, offering individualized and free tutoring to children who, for a variety of reasons all of which are rooted in poverty, are educationally deprived. We want to do it even better than we are doing it now, and we want to be able to accommodate more children who seek our services. Last year even though we tutored 150 Holyoke schoolchildren with the help of more than 200 tutors, we still had children on a wait list. We want to continue; and we want our children to continue their schooling with a taste of success and hope for the future. And we both want and need your financial support so that we can continue.

Our "Wish List"

  • Furnishing-A reading loft for the grades 2 & 3
  • Staffing Needs-Endowment for Tutor Coordinator, and Salary for another full time staff-person
  • All types of paper- construction, drawing, copier and toilet paper
  • Varied Snacks-fresh fruit, juices, baked goods
  • Sound system- For our End-of-the Year Celebration & other events
  • Office needs- ink cartridges & copy machine
  • Funds to Honor the children- Field trips to museums, sporting & art events, Even Surprises.
  • Tutoring-At the end of September we will begin again. Children will come running toward our doors for help. They come from the three poorest sector schools of the sixth poorest city in our country. They are looking for help. We would all love to see your face, hear your voice, have you become part of our Homework House family.

How Donations help Homework House INC:

Homework House INC focuses on literacy and creative arts. We hold a 2 week summer camp each year. Like Homework House tutoring, our Summer Camp is free to students in grades 1 through 8. It includes:

  • reading and writing.
  • puppetry
  • drawing
  • jewelry making
  • Field Trips-Like visiting the Holyoke Public Library, Sturbridge Village, the Holyoke Children's Museum

Homework House INC Mission Statement:

-Homework House is a non-profit organization who provides free after-school tutoring and mentoring for children in Holyoke, Massachusetts, who are at risk for academic failure and dropping out of school. We give children a loving and caring environment. We help them improve their literacy skills so they can become productive members of our community. We work towards rekindling their interests in learning and self-improvement - one page at a time. Services are provided to school-age children without regard to race, religion, ethnicity, or gender.

Development Committee

Scope:

Makes outreach to the Holyoke community, including business owners, spreading the word about Homework House and soliciting support, financial and otherwise, for our work.
This committee makes long-term plans for the growth of support for Homework House through alliances with other community organizations, and formal and informal contact with local businesses and philanthropic agencies, as well as individuals.
The work of this committee is ongoing, finding strategies to reach the goal of sustainability for Homework House by the Development of a “Friends network”
