Debate in the Neighborhood (DIN) seeks to inspire understanding and critical thinking among high school students from diverse cultures, ethnicities, and religious traditions, demonstrating that opposing views can be explored in ways that connect rather than divide people.

DIN was launched In 2012 in NYC at three sites: the Hindu Temple Society of North America, the UNITED SIKHS at the Sikh Cultural Society/118th street Gurdwara and the Jamaica Muslim Center. Focusing on the theme of Securing Liberty students prepared first in their own groups and then came together and were grouped in teams with a student from each site. Each week, students from the 3 groups met at a different house of worship to work on their cases, explore each others religious traditions, and develop understanding through teamwork. The program culminated in a final tournament where mixed teams debated “Ethnic Profiling is a Just Means of Combating Terrorism”.

Now we need your help.

Building on our enormous success, DIN plans to add three new sites in the 2012-2013 school year.It is our aim to focus on the Bronx and talks are already underway with various Churches and Jewish Synagogues. The topic for this year will center around stop and frisk and surveillance - an issue vitally important to all New Yorkers and particularly relevant for youth and immigrant communities. With your generous donation of $25 or more you can help us spread understanding and foster educated discourse. If we are able to raise the full $10,000 we will be able to provide travel stipends for students and move our final tournament to a larger venue. All donors will receive a personal invitation and a reserved seat at the final tournament as well as recognition in our tournament book.

We invite you to learn more on the Debate In the Neighborhood Website and thank you for your support.
