The ICD Christmas Toy Sale is an opportunity to let neighbors who are on very limited income have a chance to be Santa to their own children—to be able to pick out the toys they want to give to their children and to pay a very low cost. Many households in this area live on less than $10,000 per year.
How does it work?
Inner City Development is committed to keeping dignity in giving. A week before the sale, a ticket is mailed to about 800 homes in the immediate area. With this ticket, two persons from each house who are at least 14 years old may come to the center on the Sunday of the following weekend and buy toys for their children. The number of toys shoppers are allowed to buy is limited so that all shoppers get something.
On the day of the sale, the order in which people shop is done in a lottery fashion. In this way, neighbors don’t have to worry about trying to be first in line. When neighbors enter for the sale, they are escorted by a volunteer who helps them with their bags, and helps them to understand how the sale works.
What makes the sale special?
1) The toys are sold at 10% of their original price. A $5.00 toy can be bought for 50 cents. The money raised at the sale goes back into helping to provide emergency services for the community. Toys that are left after the sale are given to neighbors who come in for emergency services and cannot even afford the few cents.
YOU GIVE TWICE: You give the toys and you give the opportunity for parents to give to their own children
How can you help?
Make a donation to go towards the purchase of toys. We have already ordered $3,600 worth of toys that we need to pay for--we acted in faith that money will come in.
