One of the main events the CA YouthBuild Coalition organizes is the Government Education Days April 15th-17th. This event brings together 180 students from all over the state of California. The first day consist of the Berkeley Tour, where they will engage with several student groups to learn about university life and take part in a panel discussion. The second day, the students will travel to Sacramento to participate in a Leadership workshop facilitated by YouthBuild alumni Bea Sweet and Noe Orgaz. The leadership curriculum will consist of how the legislation process operates, the importance of advocacy, public speaking and issues that affect their communities. The third day, Capitol Hill Day, staff and students will participate in activities that centered on the traditional program of hearing from key legislatures about the importance of civic engagement and how students can learn to advocate for themselves at the local, state and federal levels. The Capitol Hill day will contain a full day of speeches, panel discussions and visits with elected officials. This event gives a great opportunity for young people to experience the importance of working to make a difference in the civic life of their communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference. It means promoting the quality of life in a community, through both political and non-political processes. The YouthBuild programs strive to empower the young people to become agents of social change. They provide structure, stability, and one-on-one individualized attention to meet their needs.

There are currently 30 YouthBuild programs across the state of California. YouthBuild programs help provide jobs and life training, construction skills, self-esteem and leadership skills for at-risk young people. The education program provides an opportunity for the students to obtain a high school education and diploma in a charter school environment.

This fundraiser will help pay for the students transporation, lodging, food and other activities.
