Gary Martin Hays rides for the kids!

Why am I riding a big wheel for 48-hours and subjecting myself to hours of muscle fatigue, soreness and sleep deprivation? Because not only am I a father of three daughters, but I believe ALL kids deserve to live a safe and happy life! Unfortunately, this is not the case in my own community and in every community across the country. It is unimaginable, but every year thousands of kids are victims to crimes including sexual abuse, abduction, neglect and violent attacks.

  • Statistics state that 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 8 boys will be sexually victimized before the age of 18.
  • Approximately 58,000 children a year are victims on non-family abduction.
  • The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that there is one registered sex offender per square mile in the United States.

All of this is enough to make any parent just want to scream and never let their children out of their sight. But even though we want to put our kids in protective bubble wrap and monitor their every step, the reality is we can’t be with our kids 24/7. It is imperative that we all take a stand and work to better protect our kids. Let’s TEACH, not tell, our children how to stay safe and avoid dangerous situations. Proactive safety education is the key element in keeping our kids safe.

All funds raised by The Big Wheel Rally riders will go to the nonprofit I founded in 2008, Keep Georgia Safe, an organization with the mission to provide safety education and crime prevention training. Keep Georgia Safe provides safety education programs for families and children, free safety seminars, online resources including safety tips and information, and media awareness campaigns.

How will your dollars be used? Keep Georgia Safe has invested more than $1 million in personal safety empowerment programs for children, CART (Child Abduction Response Team) training for first responders, community and public awareness campaigns, free safety seminars, electronic newsletters and online safety tips and resources. Keep Georgia Safe has sponsored the training of 130 safety education instructors in Georgia. 6 safety education programs are in place in schools and community centers. 700+ children have received safety education training. Keep Georgia safe has held over 50 free safety seminars for parents, schools and businesses.
