A team for HEAL THE WORLD INC
"TEAM ACP" a team to help the HEAL THE WORLD INC...
Each year the American Church in Paris organizes a mission trip to bring support to people in countries with big needs. This year they intend to bring a group of six young adults to Burkina Faso to work with Shalom Secondary School in Ouagadougou from July 2nd to July 17th. This school is supported by the AD.BERACA church, sponsored by a non-profit organization, Heal the World, whose goal is to develop the education of the children in Burkina Faso.
Burkina Faso is a landlocked country of more than 15.2 million people, a 21.8% literacy rate, and where 90% of the population relies on subsistence farming, there is only one university. The sole university, located in the capital Ouagadougou, has a teacher to student ratio of 1:100. These figures reflect one of the greatest threats the country faces in its own development: a lack of widespread tertiary education. Heal the World intends to build the second full-fledged University in Burkina Faso, and begin core courses by fall of 2013.
Since Burkina Faso is a Francophone country, Heal the World began with an English Language Institute in 2009, which serves secondary school-aged children, taught by HtW staff. Thee students who attend study in the English Language Institute for 4 years before they are prepared to advance to the University that Heal the World will have completed by 2013. Our aim as volunteers then, will be to teach at this Institute to make sure potential students for the university have a sufficient English to be able to follow courses at a university level.
I am fundraising for our travel expenses, school supplies and the additional funds to support to the school. The estimated cost of one person to go on the trip is 1400 euros. There are 6 people on our team!
