64% of students in the Sioux City Community School District qualify for free or reduced lunches during the school year. Free Summer Meals awareness is important to making sure these students continue to have healthy meals when school is finished for the year. Studies show these same students come to school hearing 30 million fewer words than their classmates. Students from low income homes spend less time hearing spoken words, reading, and being read to. This creates a major literacy gap for our student population where 1 in 5 is also learning English as a second language. Reading Corps members, provided in partnership with the United Way of Siouxland, have made great strides in reducing the literacy gap for students in our elementary schools. Our goal is to make sure each of our 15 elementary schools has access to hire a Reading Corps member.

Your pledge can help. Each team member fundraising for the 30/30 Project will fast for 30 hours November 29 - 30 in honor of hunger awareness and recruit pledges of $10 per hour for a goal of $300 per person.

30 hours hungry for the 30 million word gap ... join the 30/30 project.

Find a donor page and pledge your support or start fundraising and be part of the project.

Can't fast but you want to join the project? The fasting wrap up party will be held at Morningside Elementary school on Wednesday November 30th with the unveiling of Can do Engineering projects. Admission is $10 and food will be served from 5:30 -7:00 p.m. (Donate a food pantry item or NEW book and admission is just $5!)
