A team for SIOUX CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS FOUNDATION
"30/30 Project" a team to help the SIOUX CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS FOUNDATION fund the Free Summer Meal and Reading Corps Programs
64% of students in the Sioux City Community School District qualify for free or reduced lunches during the school year. Free Summer Meals awareness is important to making sure these students continue to have healthy meals when school is finished for the year. Studies show these same students come to school hearing 30 million fewer words than their white-collared classmates. Students from low income homes spend less time hearing spoken words, reading, and being read to. This creates a major literacy gap for our student population where 1 in 5 is also learning English as a second language. Reading Corps volunteers, provided in partnership with the United Way of Siouxland, have made great strides in reducing the literacy gap for students in our elementary schools. Our goal is to make sure each of our 15 elementary schools has access to hire a Reading Corps volunteer.
