The BAUDL Champions of Diversity Challenge engages the Bay Area legal community in raising funds to support a crucial intervention in the legal pipeline: a program that trains more than 500 underserved youth to research, prepare briefs, and advocate positions. The Challenge helps hundreds of aspiring lawyers in the Bay Area develop the skills to be leaders in the field of law.

The 2014 Challenge raised more than $182,000 for Bay Area youth!

Participation in debate gives underserved high school students the skills they need to gain admittance to college and succeed in the professional world. In addition, it provides a gateway to previously foreclosed areas of professional and civic life — including most prominently the field of law. The Champions of Diversity Challenge allows firms in the Bay Area to make an impact:

Directly impact the local pipeline to the legal profession. Fully 54% of our debaters aspire to enter the legal field as lawyers, judges, and lawmakers. BAUDL students learn the argumentative and analytical skills necessary for a career in law, skills that few would otherwise learn in the schools they attend.

Participate in a local tradition. More than twenty firms in the Bay Area have contributed their time and money to support urban debate as a diversity pipeline initiative, ensuring that minority students who are interested in law can become well-prepared for law school and legal careers.

Join a distinguished national community of support. Erwin Chemerinsky, Laurence Tribe, and Elena Kagan joined 40 law school deans and professors from top schools in signing a Statement of Support endorsing the strong connection between urban debate and diversity in the legal profession.
