Upper Iowa University’s Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a community service group who works in conjunction with “Peacocks for Progress” whose mission is to promote critical thinking, social action and community involvement by combining education and direct service on the local, regional and national levels.

The concept is a fairly simple one. An alternative break program places teams of college students in communities to engage in positive social action and education. The goals can range from increasing cultural awareness, to bringing academic learning to life, or to creating a life-long service ethic.

ASB is a student group committed to encouraging volunteerism by UIU students. The trip provides a unique spring break experience and an opportunity to increase your awareness of another culture. But by far the most important part of the trip is the lasting impact you will have made on the community in which you are working.

An ASB is a great way to realize the benefits of volunteerism--both on a personal level and for the community as a whole.

“Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare think.”

- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1807-1882
