Hospice Austin’s Camp Brave Heart is a two and a half day camp experience designed to combine the fun of a recreational camp with intense, therapeutic grief support. We serve 100 children from Central Texas, including Travis, Hays, Williamson, Bastrop and Caldwell Counties. The camp is provided free of charge. The target population for this project is children ages 6-17 who have suffered the loss of someone important in their lives due to death. The death can be a result of natural causes, illness, accident, murder or suicide. Creative activities, peer discussion and trust exercises are a few of the ways we encourage campers in their exploration of emotional, behavioral and physical adjustments to their loss.

Nearly every day, in our community, a child will lose a mother or a father or a brother or sister. Though it may be an ordinary occurrence, its effects are anything but ordinary. For those who are left behind, there is an enormous burden of grief to carry. Without help, the burden can be crushing and can adversely affect long-term mental and physical health. Children are especially vulnerable despite (and sometimes even because of) adults’ attempts to shield them from their loss. In addition to feeling intense sadness following the death of a parent or sibling or other special person in their lives, children may also experience extreme anger, insomnia, a sense of isolation, self-accusation, and physical distress. At Camp Brave Heart, 100 children learn how to cope with these powerful, but normal, symptoms in a safe environment, surrounded by other children who know exactly how they feel. They begin the healing process together and foster it in one another. As one of our campers said, “It helps to be here with everyone because it is just too much for one person to do alone.”
