I became involved with the Bridges to Independence tutoring program a couple years ago and it quickly became a cause very close to my heart.

Bridges to Independence (formerly Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless) has been helping local women and families in crisis for almost 30 years. They provide shelter and a range of supportive services to assist their clients in becoming self-sufficient, stable members of their communities. A large part of their programming involves supporting the children of assisted families. Children are provided one-on-one assistance with homework and tutoring during the school year, along with special outings and activities designed just for them. During the summer, the children are offered the opportunity to attend day camp and field trips along with other special activities. A special highlight of the summer is an amusement park trip that the children fund themselves through a lemonade stand that they manage and operate at the shelter (check it out this summer at Food Truck Thursday in Clarendon). Half of the proceeds from the stand are donated to a charity of their choice as our kids learn about business, customer service and the joys of helping others.
