SXSW is pleased to support the post Sandy rebuilding efforts of Architecture for Humanity and its mission to build a sustainable future.

Rebuild the Rockaways // Rebuild the World

Four months ago the Eastern Seaboard was ravaged by super storm Sandy. The relief effort has ended and recovery is coming to a close. Now is the time to rebuild. Not for now but for the future. With a dozen projects in the region, we are working with SXSW to help with the rebuilding of two very specific spaces, The Harbor Light Restaurant and Broad Channel Volunteer Firehouse. Additionally 50% of the funds will go to support the more than 70 other projects we are building around the world.

Thanks to a number of supporters we have an $85,000 match through the length of SXSW (interactive, film and music). Even if you can't give PLEASE spread the word through social media using the hashtag #sxsw4sandy

The Harbor Light Restaurant
For more than a decade, the restaurant at the corner of Beach 130th Street and Newport Avenue served as a refuge from the hardships that hit the close-knit community. It has seen times of trouble before. Restaurant owner Bernie Heeran, a former NYC firefighter, lost his son in the 9/11 attacks. Two months later American Airlines Flight 587 slammed into 131st Street and the Harbor Light opened its doors for use as a command station for emergency workers.

When Superstorm Sandy hit land and sea waters engulfed the Rockaways, the restaurant caught ablaze as fires raged through the neighborhood, taking with it a beloved landmark. Let's help build this back.

Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department (BCVFD)
Over the last 101 years the Broad Channel Volunteers have been in service, they have created a close working relationship with the local FDNY companies as well as the volunteer companies from Nassau & Suffolk Counties.

BCVFD is currently situated a two story building which suffered significant damage to buildings, and they also lost vehicles and apparatus. The fire department has a plan of relocating to a new location nearby and depending on the funds available we can either repair the existing building or help retrofit the new location.

About Architecture for Humanity
Architecture for Humanity is a non profit building services agency that provides professional design and construction services. The organization has been actively rebuilding communities for more than 14 years. After recent disasters along the Gulf Coast, in Haiti and in Northern Japan, we tapped our network of thousands of professionals to lend time and expertise to build back better and bring community structures, infrastructure and other essential services to affected communities. To date, more than 2 Million people live, learn, heal and work in structures built by the organization.

As a New York registered non profit the city is our first home. We have over 400+ licensed building professionals and are commited to rebuild communities devestated by Hurricane Sandy. We are not the first responders, we are the last responders. We do not stop until families are back home.
