The Stevens County Food Shelf was established to serve low income persons with emergency and supplemental food needs.
The Stevens County Food Shelf was established in 1986. It is located at 701 Iowa Ave., Morris MN. It is open one hour a day, 5 days a week. The hours are Mon. 2:30-3:30, Tue., Wed. & Fri. 10:30-11:30 and Thurs. 5:30-6:30. It is staffed entirely by volunteers. Clients may come in once a month or in an emergency may get permission from Social Services to get food earlier. Clients are always treated with courtesy and respect.
Between 100 to 120 households are served by the Food Shelf each month or 300 to 365 people per month. 67,555 pounds of food (including personal items) was distributed between January and September of 2013.
The Food Shelf exists mainly on donations of food items and money from the local community. There are several large food drives each year and local churches and other groups donate food regularly. 14,683 pounds of food has been received in donations from January to September of 2013. Cash donations and various grants allow us to purchase food from the North Country Food Bank as well as our local grocery store, to cover what is not received in donations. Residents of Stevens County are very generous and provide our clients with a great selection of food items and personal care items.
