Our focus is to provide academic support for students in grades K-12 to promote a culture of academic excellence.
When Evelyn Benedetti started volunteering in 1958 she had no idea her single act of generosity would span 56 years and impact the lives of thousands of Springfield students. She created a snowball effect that led to the establishment of a volunteer advisory council, involvement from the Chamber of Commerce, new volunteer initiatives and, ultimately, the incorporation of SSV as a nonprofit organization in February 1979. That same year First Lady Rosalind Carter selected SSV as a model of the spirit of volunteerism, the first of many recognitions SSV would receive.
Over the years SSV expanded to include paid Program Manager positions. Two of the early staff members, Helaine Sweet and Sally Wittenberg, eventually rose to the leadership position in the organization. In 2006, Denise Cogman followed suit, becoming the third staff member to advance to the role of Executive Director. SSV has remained a strong supporter of the Springfield Public Schools, developing programs in response to the diverse needs of the students and the district.
This year on Valley Gives Day, SSV is asking members of the community to help us continue our rich history by making a donation to assist us in keeping critical programming such as mentoring and academic tutoring alive and to help us continue to develop needed programs such as early literacy initiatives.
