I want to raise money to help educate medical and school professionals on the effects of amplified pain on children and their families.

When i was young, I was an active soccer player but kept getting injured. I was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder which makes me more susceptible to injury. After so many injuries, my nervous system went out of whack and I ended up at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia when my foot went numb, ice cold and had shooting pains inside. I had been in a wheelchair for months and had missed over 30 days of school because the pain was too much to bear. I couldn't even tolerate the bedsheet touching my foot!

After 3 days of testing, Dr. Sherry was called in and what he said changed my life forever! I was diagnosed with Reflex Neurovascular Dystrophy, also known as Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome. Where all of the doctors i had seen up to that point told me to rest, immobilize (cast or brace) and use crutches, walker or wheelchair, Dr. Sherry insisted that the only way to tell my nervous system that my leg was ok was to use it, even if it was painful!

It took weeks of painful Physical Therapy but I got full use of my leg back and returned to school. But the pain returned, in a lot of different places (my back, knees, shoulders and hips). It took a year on the waiting list until I got a spot at the Amplified Pain Clinic at CHOP. I left school for 4 weeks and went to the Day Hospital program for intense therapies. It was a lot of hard work, but it was all worth it! I now know how hard I have to push through and fight so the pain doesn't take over my life. When most people feel pain, they avoid doing whatever is causing the pain, but people with RND/AMPS have to do just the opposite and do MORE of what causes the pain.

Please help me raise money so that the Childhood RND Educational Foundation Inc. can educate more medical professionals and school personnel on the real pains caused by RND/AMPS and how it impacts the children and their families.

My family and I will be participating in the AMPS 5K Run/Walk on December 1, 2012 and I'm looking forward to running without pain thanks to Dr. Sherry and everyone at the RND Clinic!!
