Sundance Institute has established the Roger Ebert Scholarship for Film Criticism to support passionate and aspiring young film critics.
PLEASE DONATE TO SEND YOUNG CRITICS TO THE SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL. EACH EBERT SCHOLAR NEEDS $3,000 TO MAKE THE TRIP POSSIBLE. FOR A LIMITED TIME, EACH BACKER WILL RECEIVE A SPECIAL ADVANCE SNEAK-PEEK SEGMENT OF STEVE JAMES' FORTHCOMING EBERT DOCUMENTARY "LIFE ITSELF"
We want to enable and inspire next generations of film critics and thinkers to learn from, and experience, the Sundance Film Festival Roger Ebert loved so much. This program will make grants to 6 to 8 emerging critics to enable them to participate in the Indiewire Critics Academy program at 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Further, the program will seek to match Indiewire Critics Academy participants with a working film critic as a mentor for the year following Sundance Film Festival. Any additional support we may raise will carry over to the following year's fund. We are putting emerging critics on the ground in Roger's memory.
The Indiewire Critics Academy, managed by Eric Kohn, chief film critic and senior editor, Indiewire, will select candidates based on an open submission process. The program is a workshop for aspiring critics who have demonstrated writing skills and a love of cinema, in a festival setting allowing them to become immersed in a deadline-driven environment as they navigate and cover Sundance Film Festival. Fellows will emerge with a deeper awareness of the practical challenges involved in gaining a foothold in entertainment journalism specifically film criticism while navigating the demands of the film world.
The Indiewire Critics Academy initiative was launched by Indiewire in 2012 at the Locarno International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. Applications are FREE and will be reviewed by Indiewire. Our goal is $25,000 per year for eight scholars.
You can help keep Roger Ebert's inspiration, spirit and passion for the Festival going for another generation. Independent film needs thoughtful, authentic and independent voices in journalism. Please help spread the word: Retweet, Post and Share - together we can create this worthy memorial.
