Your donation will help make it possible for children age 3-19 with disabilities to play baseball in an organized league.
There is something about playing the game of baseball that lights up kid's eyes, but for children facing physical and mental challenges, that opportunity can often be a difficult first step. The Miracle League gives these children the opportunity to get out in the sunshine, and enjoy playing the game of baseball in its purest form. The City of Lakeville has approved the use of a parcel of land at King Park alongside seven traditional baseball fields. The specially designed Miracle League field will have a 1/2 inch thick rubberized playing surface which enable kids using wheelchairs to easily get around the bases, and provide more cushion in the event of a fall. The Lakeville Baseball Association (LBA) will offer summer and fall leagues that will serve the entire south metro area when the field is complete. LBA will schedule players from the mainstream baseball programs to act as "buddies" for miracle league players. This interaction between youth with different ability levels will have long lasting effects for the player and the buddie. We broke ground on our field on September 12th, 2010, but still need additional funds to finish the project in the spring of 2011. Over 120 players have indicated an interest in playing in our new league as soon as construction is complete! We estimate that we will have up to 240 players in the league by summer of 2012.
