Our Partner// Build Your Future Today in Siem Reap, Cambodia
Sedtha Long survived the Khmer Rouge genocide of the 70's, which stole the lives of ten of his fourteen family members. He saw the devastation and the sheer chaos left behind by the brutal regime, and decided to dedicate his life to rebuilding his country by empowering the youth with education and better health.
In 2006, Sedtha founded the Build Your Future Today (BFT) Center, which provides health and education programs for impoverished children in the rural villages near Siem Reap, Cambodia. BFT's mission is to provide education and economic tools required to attain self-sufficiency among Cambodians. GlobeMed's partnership started in Fall 2011. BFT's projects center around Community Education Development, Child Support Center, Community Healthcare/Nutrition Development, Community Peace Building, and Livelihood Improvement.
GlobeMed at UVA hopes to raise $5,600.00 this year for BFT's Safe Mother and Child program. This program will reach hundreds of villagers and improve the health and nutrition of many children so they can be productive at school. The money will not only go towards buying the ingredients of the meals, but also towards monitoring programs whereby BFT staff members can continue to follow-up on the children's BMI's to ensure they stay in a healthy range.
The Safe Mother and Child nutrition programs provide nutritious breakfasts to schoolchildren in Sre Robong and Arak Svay, to start their day off right. Comprised of healthy seasonal vegetables, rice, and broth, the introduction of this program has substantially increased the overall BMI's of the children there, facilitating their learning and growth.
