Who We Are // GlobeMed at Georgetown

Founded in 2010, GlobeMed at Georgetown is one of 50 GlobeMed chapters working to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world. We work with Primeros Pasos in the Palajunoj Valley of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, a non-profit clinic that provides over 7,500 children and adults access to quality medical, dental, and laboratory services along with providing health education classes year-round to participating schools, daycare centers, and women’s groups. This year, GlobeMed at Georgetown is aiming to raise at $7000 to provide heath education to rural Guatemalan children.

Our Partner//Primeros Pasos in the Palajunoj Valley of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala

Primeros Pasos is a non-profit, independent organization with a comprehensive outlook on health care. Primeros Pasos works in the Palajunoj Valley, a rural valley in western Guatemala with high rates of communicable diseases, malnutrition, and untreated chronic diseases. With the collaboration of health professionals, health educators, volunteers, and community leaders, Primeros Pasos offers quality and affordable health care and health education to the rural, underserved communities. Primeros Pasos incorporates and combines clinical care, health education, and community outreach programs to effectively provide preventative and primary care.

Our Project// $7000 to provide heath education to rural Guatemalan children

In the Palajunoj Valley, like other rural areas in Guatemala, children are vulnerable to increased parasitic infections and malnutrition, which cause stunted development. The Healthy Schools Program has two major components, "health field trips" hosted in the clinic and health education outreach in the schools, which combined help reach nearly 3,000 children in 10 schools in the Valley each year. Every week, individual classes from the local primary schools arrive at the clinic for a "health field trip." Students receive a medical and dental check-up, are tested for parasites, and participate in an interactive health education class focused on basic hygiene and nutrition. In addition, every child is sent home with a toothbrush, soap, and any medication that they may need. The outreach component of the program strategically supplements the basic health lessons taught during the in-clinic visits. The outreach team travels to the schools and gives workshops on age-appropriate themes such as the environment, self-esteem, domestic violence, drug addiction, and reproductive health.
