Open A World of Possibilities for Students

ATC Vision: Every child in Alexandria can read and succeed!

Our mission: To provide the foundation for future learning success by helping to ensure that children in the Alexandria City Public Schools can read at or above grade level by the end of third grade.

There is no greater gift we can give a child than books and the skills they need to learn to read!

Because, if children cannot learn to read by 3rd grade, they have a hard time reading to learn in 4th grade and beyond because a majority of the material is incomprehensible to them.

Why donate to the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium? Here is what one volunteer had to say.

Touch the Future. Tutor!
by Sissy Walker

When I retired as a preschool director, I signed up straightaway with the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium. I was forthwith trained (always a good sign with a non-profit!) and before I knew it, I was meeting with my two adorable first grade tutees. At their school and at several other elementary schools in Alexandria, the "Book Buddies" tutoring system is used. Each tutee has an individualized activity folder that's constantly updated by the Book Buddies coordinator according to each child's progress. The structure of the lessons and activities in the children's folders each week means you never feel at a loss, and you can see their week by week progress as the lessons are changed out.

I was constantly amazed by the steady upward trend of my students, delighted by the support of their classroom teacher, and so proud of the progress they made from fall to spring. I look back on the year with profound satisfaction - not only did my tutoring help turn non-readers into very competent readers, but my life was enriched in ways I never even imagined, from learning about henna-tinged fingertips to hearing my tutee announce "I am a scientist." It is powerful stuff for both partners in the tutoring relationship.

How can I help? Alexandria Tutoring Consortium needs dependable volunteers to tutor ACPS kindergartners and first graders in literacy skills once or twice a week from November through the end of May during the 2015 -2016 school year.

How does tutoring work? Our commitment to each child is to provide two 30 minute one-on-one tutoring sessions twice a week at the school during the school day from November through May. Training, lesson plans and materials targeted at each child's reading needs are provided.
