A dance-a-thon fundraiser to provide 1 year of education for all 21 boys living in the HALO Makarere Orphanage in Kampala, Uganda.
On the evening of April 8th, 2011, our youth group will be hosting "Dance for Change," a dance-a-thon fundraiser. We are hoping to raise enough funds to provide one year of education for all 21 boys living in the HALO Makarere Home, an Orphanage in Kampala, Uganda.
Why a dance-a-thon? Two reasons: 1) The boys of Makarere are known for their fun-loving spirits and they love to dance. 2) To celebrate the education and change that our fundraising will bring to their lives.
These 21 boys come from difficult pasts and the Makarere Home provides shelter, water, food, clothing, and education and uses art therapy and the teachings of Jesus to give them a loving foundation on which to stand. But…they need outside help to support their efforts.
We have set a goal of raising $6250. This amount will pay for a full year of education for all 21 boys. Compare that to the approximately $8000 it costs to provide one year of education for one child in the Simsbury school system.
This fundraiser is especially exciting because it has personal ties. Last spring, Peter Sseggembe visited with our youth group and shared his story. As a boy, Peter grew up in the Makarere Home where he gained an education and learned values of love, compassion, and respect. Because of Makarere, Peter was able to graduate from college and is now a mentor to boys living in the Makarere Home as well as other orphanages. It was after Peter's visit when our youth expressed a deep desire to support the boys of Makarere.
On Sunday April 3rd, we will skype with the boys of Makarere to meet them and hear from them about what education means for their lives. This fundraiser is about providing education for 21 boys, it's a celebration of change in their lives, and it will open the eyes of our young people.
Here is how you can participate...
1) Donate! If you would like to donate to the collection effort of a specific member of our youth group, click on their name above and follow the instructions under "Make A Donation" on the right side of their page. If you would like to make a general donation, click on any name above and do the same.
2) Dance! You can attend "Dance for Change!" Our youth group will be dancing from 7pm-midnight, but all members, friends, and family of First Church are invited to dance from 7-10pm in Palmer Hall at First Church, Simsbury. Together we will dance our hearts out as we celebrate the education that together we will have provided for the boys of the Makarere Orphanage!
3) Meet the boys of Makarere! Join us for the 10am worship service on April 3rd and stay for a Skype session with the boys of Makarere in the Sanctuary after the service (11am)!
Let's give these boys a bright future through education. We can do this. Please donate now!
