Across the Adirondack North Country, independent theaters are struggling to meet a looming deadline: They must make the necessary transition to digital projection, or face the possibility of closing their doors.

Our small-town theaters are vital to keeping downtowns alive and serve an important role in ensuring strong, vibrant communities. Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) and the Adirondack Film Society are working to make sure our small town theaters don’t go dark.

In a unique collaboration of 8 theaters across Northern New York, the “Go Digital or Go Dark” campaign is raising money for each theater to complete needed digital upgrade work by the end of 2013. This is a one-time campaign to save these theaters from shutting their doors. This community-based effort affects us all.

How the campaign works

  • ANCA is working with each theater to help coordinate a community based campaign as well as outreach to major donors. The online portion (which is bring raised here) is about a third of the total $1.1 million that needs to be raised.
  • In addition to online fundraising, ANCA and the theaters are pursuing grants, loans and other funding sources.
  • At campaign's conclusion, the funds will be distributed as no-interest loans to each participating theater.
