We are excited to be partenring with an amazing organization named Yahel Israel. Yahel Israel partners with local grassroots NGO’s to create high-quality immersion experience that are community based and emphasize depth and sustainability. We will be partnering with Friends by Nature, a NGO that works in the local Ethiopian community. We will be focusing on community empowerment and education. We will be working closely with a network of “Gar’inim” (young communities of Ethiopian Israelis) who share a common desire to strengthen the Ethiopian community. In addition to working along side the community we will also be hosted by them, making this an experince of cultural exchange, service learning, and community building.

This trip is part of the Maryland Hillel Alternative Break program, which is one of the largest in the country taking over 150 students on 8 trips across the country and the world. On these trips, students engage in active service, interact with Jewish communities and learn about social issues and self. Maryland Hillel and Hillel and Repair the World offer students the opportunity to immerse themselves in domestic and global communities in order to learn about and actively combat social justice issues. Alternative Breaks inspire students to understand their role in the world and their ability to make change. Alternative breaks challenge students to think critically about the relationship between social justice and Judaism and about our personal obligation to others and ability to make change in the world.
