Knowledge. Confidence. Hope. Equipping urban students with these qualities is the bold mission of New City Christian School, which sits like an oasis surrounded by several hundred units of public housing within a city zip code better known for high school drop outs than for academic excellence. Last year in the Asheville City Schools, only 44% of African-American children in grades 3-8 passed both their reading and math end-of-grade tests. Are New City students faring any better? Yes! New City students are reading midway through kindergarten and first graders are doing second grade math. Second graders are studying ancient Greece, and third graders are writing in beautiful cursive and deciphering square roots. Enthusiasm for learning is evident in every classroom as is the thrill of achievement and the knowledge that life has a purpose. Last year at New City, 93% of students were working at or above grade level! The school will add 4th grade this fall, and hopes to eventually offer pre-K through 8th grade, using a rigorous academic curriculum similar to that used in the best private schools in Asheville.
On September 17 we will be participating in the Asheville Citizen-Times Half-Marathon/5K as part of Team New City, and we are looking for teammates to sponsor our run. All of the students attending this wonderful school pay some tuition, but because most of these families are economically disadvantaged, tuition covers only 10% of the operating cost. We want to help raise the other 90% of the funds necessary to keep this opportunity available to some of the most vulnerable but promising children in our city. EVERY dollar raised will be used to provide scholarships for New City students. Will you join us by sponsoring our run and keeping a family’s dream of a great education for their children alive? Now that’s teamwork!
