Raising funds for holocaust survivors living at or below the poverty line, so that they may live their lives with comfort and dignity.
Please join me in support of THE SURVIVOR INITIATIVE, a volunteer-led national effort that I am on the Founding Committee of that raises awareness and funds for Holocaust survivors living in poverty.
I was shocked to learn about the large number of Holocaust survivors living at or below the poverty line in the US today, including over 200 in the Washington, DC area. These survivors get by from month to month on meager assistance that does not fully cover the cost of food, rent, heat, doctor visits and medications.
As survivors age, funding has decreased as needs have intensified. Historically, support for survivor services has been funded by grants from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, by local Jewish federations and private donors. Recently, a reduction in funding from traditional sources, combined with a substantial increase in survivors needing more intensive services, has placed these survivor assistance programs in jeopardy.
Through a designated fund at the Jewish Communal Fund, The Survivor Initiative makes grants across the country to strengthen the capacity of local agencies that care for poor, frail, and vulnerable Holocaust survivors with complex bio-psycho-social needs. In Washington, DC, our funds support the work of the Jewish Social Service Agency (JSSA) and its 20-year old Holocaust Survivor Program.
Please help us continue to provide this critical support to Holocaust survivors so that they may live their lives with the comfort and dignity they deserve.
