Youth Programs in Minneapolis and St. Paul

For 20 years, HIRED has shown its ability to meet the needs of youth - serving over 800 last year. HIRED started its first youth program (Hmong Youth Learn to Work) in 1979; opened its first school-based program in 1993; and today has programs to serve young parents, youth in foster care and youth offenders.
Meet 19-year old Terrance, a committed young man who put HIRED's youth services to good use. He wanted to find a job so he could help his mother support the family without returning to crime. He was connected with Rachel, an employment counselor, and they quickly formed a tight bond.
"She's like family," Terrance says. "She keeps me on task, takes me to interviews, challenges me. She always follows through and does what she said she would - and also makes sure I do what I said I'd do." He cites his relationship with Rachel as the best part about working with HIRED.
At first Terrance didn't think anyone would even call him for an interview because of his criminal background, much less hire him, but Rachel kept encouraging him to submit applications. To his amazement, he did get interviews, and less than two months after starting with HIRED, he'd landed his first job. Now he tells others about his experience with HIRED: "It's the best place in the world if you want to get a job."
Today, Terrance is working to complete his GED. He would like to go back to school to learn to be an electrician or plumber. And, Rachel is still his mentor.
