YoKid brings yoga to ALL kids & teens, with a commitment to provide programs for those living in under-served communities.
YoKid has facilitated over 4,620 kid’s yoga classes in the Greater DC Area, introducing yoga to more than 2,000 kids & teens. Currently, we maintain a database of 114 volunteer teachers and classroom assistants to facilitate the program. Since 2006, we have more than doubled the number of programs to reach more deserving youth than we had ever anticipated.
Children living in today’s complex urban environments face ever-increasing challenges and there are greater levels of stress and obesity among children living in poverty. YoKid was created to help children confront these challenges by increasing their self-awareness, concentration levels and physical activity through yoga.
Kids and teens who participate in yoga have been shown to have lower levels of anger. They are more relaxed and emotionally balanced, better able to focus and physically more adept-all of which will benefit them physically, academically, socially, and emotionally. They learn to better regulate their reactions to peers and adults and they are better able to concentrate.
Our goal is that, by providing children, particularly those living in poverty, with the benefits of practicing yoga from a young age, we will equip them with techniques that can help them better cope with stress, decrease their likelihood of obesity, and improve their general understanding of how to care for themselves both mentally and physically throughout childhood and into adulthood.
