Women of Nations (WON) provides supportive services, including crisis intervention, advocacy, shelter and connections to community resources for battered women and their families. WON educates the public on domestic abuse issues, promotes systems change, and forwards a vision of peace and justice for all people and every generation. Specific programs are:
24 Hour Crisis Line: The WON Domestic Violence Hotline is staffed 24 hours a day by trained advocates who provide crisis assistance and information about shelters, legal advocacy and access to community resources. Callers often are in crisis and their immediate need is to find safety and sanctuary for themselves and their children. WON Crisis Line staff members are trained to respond quickly and appropriately to meet the unique needs of each caller. Women are connected with Community Advocates and supported to take action to change their circumstances, protect themselves and their children, and take advantage of available support.
Eagle’s Nest Shelter: Women seeking refuge from battering are housed at Eagle’s Nest Shelter, with the capacity to provide safe sanctuary and support for 46 women and children. While at Eagle’s Nest Shelter, women receive case management support and advocacy. Women create a safety plan, identify barriers to securing and maintaining safe and stable housing, receive employment and job training referrals and secure emotional and practical support for themselves and their children. Follow up support is provided to women leaving shelter through support groups, community advocacy and a 24-hour Crisis Line. To ensure success and sustainability for our families once they leave our shelter, Women of Nations offers weekly educational courses through our life skills program. We also provide a nurturing and healthy growing environment for the children in our shelters through the Children’s program with fun and educational classes and activities.
Community Advocacy Program (CAP): Community Advocates work to help women bring a stop to the violence in their lives, allowing them to stabilize and secure safe, affordable housing for themselves and their families. Advocates work to identify critical material needs that women have, including rent and/or utility payments, formula and diapers, clothing for themselves and their children, food and furniture. They develop safety and independence plans with women and work to connect them with the support resources they need to carry out their plan and secure stability. Women are provided linkage to education, training and employment resources, to supportive child care, to subsidized housing, to transportation subsidy, health care and to independent living skills training and support.
Community Outreach: CAP conducts outreach to the community on issues such as domestic violence, teen dating and safety, working with the culturally specific needs of the Native American population, and historical trauma, as well as introducing our program and services to the general public. Women of Nations does this through tabling at diverse events as well as actual presentations to various groups and providing training and additional presentations at conferences.
