Womanshelter/Compañeras has been keeping victims of domestic violence safe for 30 years. Originally founded as a 24-hour hotline by three young women, all named Jane, Womanshelter has evolved into a leading provider of shelter and support services in the region, serving more than one thousand victims of domestic violence a year. Last year, Womanshelter/Companeras responded to 4,200 hotline calls, and sheltered 73 women and 95 children, providing all food, clothing, personal care items, school supplies, and above all, hope for a better future. Womanshelter takes an innovative approach to the issue, creating new programs to meet emerging needs. The organization piloted one of the first Teen Dating Violence Education programs in the state, and was also among the first to provide advocates in courts to help victims seeking restraining orders. Womanshelter continues to build awareness of the issue by engaging in unique collaborations with schools, community groups, and most recently, Westover Reserve Air Base. After three decades of service, Womanshelter/Companeras and its staff of nineteen, is still working as hard as ever to provide comfort and resources to victims, and to end domestic violence in our communities.
