Raising money to feed orphaned and at-risk children in Nicaragua.
After running the Shamrock half-marathon in 2009 for "fun", I vowed not to run again. My knees were a mess with bone bruising and swelling after that race; my body was not meant for running. So can you imagine the panic I felt when God nudged me, "Windy, run to raise money!!!" And then, the faces beyond the fence came to my mind. Those faces are amazing, beautiful and filled with the Holy Spirit. After some soul-searching and prayer, I knew that God was nudging me to do more than I am able or even willing. To borrow from Lisa Terkeurst, "I want to be a woman who says Yes to God." So here I am, training to run the 8K.
Just a few weeks ago I was in Nicaragua and I was able to meet incredible champions for the Kingdom of Christ, partners of ONet, who are helping to run feeding centers that provide one good meal to many hungry children. For many of them, this may be the ONLY meal they get that day. With their parents collecting plastic or cardboard in the city dump all day, they are left with slightly older siblings or on their own to fend for themselves. Some parents will come home to fix an evening meal...others will not. I met Oscar during this last trip; he is God's angel who used to be one of these kids. He told us there were many nights he went to bed hungry, with only sugar water for dinner. He vowed after many struggles, to return to Nica and serve God by feeding children, ensuring they wouldn't go to bed hungry like he did. Oscar is helping to organize feeding centers that are feeding over 200 kids in Northern Nica. But there are so many more to feed. It is heartbreaking to see kids on the other side of the fence crying because there is not enough food for them.We have a chance to come alongside Onet and partners to feed even more kids. Lets make faces on the other side of the fence a distant memory.
I know that running is beyond me, that God is talking directily to me to DO SOMETHING about what He has shown me, and that the money we raise to feed these orphans and hungry children will please God. I ask you, WAHT IS GOD CALLING YOU TO DO?
"Most of all, love each other...Be quick to give a meal to the hungry, a bed to the homeless-cheerfully. Be generous with the differnt things God gave you, passing them around so all get in on it: if words, let it be God's words; if help, let it be God's hearty help. That way, God's bright presece will be evident in everything through Jesus, and he'll get all the credit as the one mighty in everything-encores to the end of time. Oh, yes!" 1Pet 4:8-11
