Welcoming Refugee Families

LSS Refugee Services resettles refugees who are extremely vulnerable--they are fleeing persecution and arriving in the United States with few personal belongings, often little to no knowledge of the English language or American culture, and many times without any family members or friends to assist them with making a new life. As a very small department of LSS, Refugee Services does the huge work of resettling around 200 refugees per year in the Twin Cities area. Next year, LSS will resettle around 300 refugees with 100 of them going to St. Cloud, Minnesota. LSS provides 90-day case management for new arrivals, works with over 100 community volunteers who serve as mentors and guides to these refugee families, and seeks donations of food, backpacks, beds, and other household items to assist refugees in making their new life. Some of our needs are food cards, bus cards, and assisting with the rent gap for newly-arrived families from Somalia, Burma, and Bhutan.
