New Education Room with a SMART Board

Inspire & enable all youth, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible & caring citizens.

Emily joined the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Westfield in 2009 in our Kidz Klub licensed childcare program as a Kindergartener and has since grown into a successful and involved 5th grader. To say that Emily’s journey has been simple and effortless would discredit her resilience and determination. Her struggles in reading may have been discouraging, but the Club was determined to help her gain confidence and succeed.

Wilson Fundations is a remedial literacy program offered at the Club. The program creates an environment that enables members to overcome literacy challenges by exposing them to literacy skills and tools that are vital components of becoming an engaged, successful student. Wilson Fundations provides a multisensory, structured, systematic, cumulative, and explicit program with a documented research base. Emily thrived while participating in this program with our Literacy Specialist, Charisse.

At the end of last year Emily completed the Wilson Fundations program. This year she moved on to 5th grade, but found the adjustment quite frustrating, as she missed the one-to-one attention she was receiving before. With her confidence and eagerness to learn waning, Emily’s mother turned to the Boys & Girls Club for help, and help we did.

Although initially skeptical, Emily was paired with Will who is our education room assistant and successful college senior from Westfield State University. He asked her to give him just one week where they would make sure her homework was fully completed on time and that she was continually working toward improving her reading skills. Needless to say, Emily and Will still work on homework together everyday at the Club.

Emily is a great example of how a stable, education-driven, and caring environment is conducive to a child’s academic and emotional success. She no longer dreads entering the Education Room, but embraces it and doesn’t waste a moment getting her homework done during Power Hour. Emily learned that procrastination was stifling her progress and gained confidence in completing her tasks promptly and correctly.

Today we are asking you to help us ensure more children like Emily get their start toward Great Futures at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Westfield. By making a financial contribution to the Club during Valley Gives Day, you can help a child find their passion, perfect their skills and increase their self-confidence to head down a path of greatness.

It just takes one person to help a child’s dreams come true. We hope you will join us in creating Great Futures through a financial contribution to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Westfield.
