VocalEssence champions choral music of all genres through innovative concerts, commissions and community engagement programs.
VocalEssence creates the human connection between conductor, composer, performer and audience in ways few organizations can. Founded in 1969 by Philip Brunelle, one of America’s most recognized musical entrepreneurs, VocalEssence presents 5-8 subscription concerts each season with the 100-voice VocalEssence Chorus and the professional 32-voice Ensemble Singers, 2 Community Concerts for all ages, and 2 major cross-cultural education programs including the Mexican composer-in-residence program, ¡Cantaré!.
What is ¡Cantaré!?
¡Cantaré! is celebrating its 6th year bringing world-renowned Mexican composers to Twin Cities elementary schools, high schools and community choirs to instill pride in Mexican culture and write music specifically for each choir. More than 400 students perform the new pieces at the ¡Cantaré! Community Concert each spring. Check out our video above to learn more.
What do students think about the VocalEssence ¡Cantaré! Program?
- “Thank you for appreciating my culture and bringing it to life on stage.”
- “It was really fun – definitely one of the best things about my first year of concert choir.”
- “It’s an amazing program, and I think everyone in choir should participate. Maybe even bring a Mexican choir up here!”
