Voices from Inside (VFI) provides writing workshops and performance opportunities to incarcerated women in Hampden County.
In more than ten years of providing writing workshops in Hampden County, VFI has served more than a thousand incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women. These women who would not otherwise have access to a supportive environment where they could increase literacy, learn about positive self-expression, and, often for the first time, simply be listened to with respect, attention and appreciation.
Participating in VFI workshops has often inspired women to further their education. Participants have gone to community colleges as well as to Ivy League colleges. One VFI alum is now getting her Masters in Social Work, another is a published playwright about to graduate from Smith College.
Many formerly incarcerated women have become trained writing facilitators, leading writing groups, sharing the benefits of creative writing, and helping to enhance literacy with other women who need support.
