The future Valatie Free Library will be an iconic and near-Net-Zero-Energy hybrid library building, and community hub.
Our VFL Sustainable Library project was spotlighted during Rio+20, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, "the Earth Summit" held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 2012.
The library's project caught the attention of the United Nations' Rio+20, for our commitment to investing in a new library facility with the goal of attaining near net-zero energy usage.
The planned green building project will align resource-use with 'ever-green' practices, including the installation of skylights, photovoltaic solar panel technology, and ductless air conditioning.
Over a decade ago, the Board of Trustees commissioned an independent Feasibility Study, which concluded that the Valatie Free Library had outgrown our 600 square foot cottage--the space we still occupy on Church Street. Since then, a 2008 report from the U.S. Census Bureau found ours to be the only traditional population center in Columbia County that has experienced growth during the past decade. Importantly, also during the past ten years, our library's program attendance has risen 1,000% (program statistics provided by Mid-Hudson Library System).
A New Library
Working on all levels, our plan anticipates and strategizes for the future; our vision favors legacy over immediacy. You can help us to improve the literary integrity of our community, making this a better place to live and work.
Rural libraries such as ours meet many needs in the community. Our goal is to gain a larger building and reduce costs by creating an energy-efficient, lower energy-use, sustainable facility; dedicating funds to address every age group.
The Library We Want: Now more than ever, your gift can help enrich our community, bringing a sustainable library to encourage and inspire future generations. The new larger library building will have separate areas that will serve many groups: adults, children, and youth.
Your Gift Will help us build the future Sustainable Valatie Free Library through the retrofit and expansion of the Kinderhook Steam Railroad Freight Barn. Housed in a near-net-zero hybrid building--iconic for an online innovative 'community hub'--the library will serve our entire community, fostering communication and cooperation between many library and community patrons and groups. Support can be made in many forms; consider these ideas, or contact us so that we can work with you to structure an appropriate gift.
