Our goal is to raise money to provide the children living in La Chureca with food, clothing, and an education.
La Chureca is a garbage dumb on the outskirts of Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. Into it flows all kinds of normal refuse from a large city: rotting food, rusting metal, dirty medical syringes, glass bottles, all kinds of plastic, and thousands of pounds of other types of trash. This dump is just like any in America, with one large exception... There are people living inside the dump, who make their livelihood by sorting through the trash that comes in from the city. Now I am not just talking about a few people living there, inside that dump is a whole community, and one that has been there for over 50 years. In some cases, three generations of families have lived in the same tin-walled, plastic-bag-roofed huts. None of these people have any money (most make a dollar a day), and they can't provide for their children. By this I mean that some families can't even feed their children, let alone clothe them or send them to school.
Because many of the children in La Chureca don't have shoes, in solidarity with them, I will be going for a week around UVA without wearing my shoes either. I won't wear shoes to and from class, in my house, going to the grocery store, anytime for a week starting on April 16th and ending on April 23rd with the Barefoot 5k Race that I will be running to raise money for the community of La Chureca.
Going down to La Chureca opened my eyes to the realities of the world and made me realize how fortunate I am to live in America, go to a great university, and to have food whenever I want it. This realization propelled me to want to participate in the Barefoot Week and the Barefoot 5k, and now to ask you two questions, and they may not be what want to hear, but two that I am going to ask nonetheless: Do you realize how blessed you are? And what have you been doing with that blessing?
So now I want to give you the opportunity to support me in doing the Barefoot Week and running the Barefoot 5k by donating to help the children of La Chureca.
Thank you for your support, and God bless.
