FRIENDS OF UTAH AVALANCHE FORE CAST CENTER INC
The goal of the Utah Avalanche Center is to keep people on top of the Greatest Snow on Earth.
The Utah Avalanche Center is a key player in the Park City Public Safety network. Some of greatest avalanche danger in the U.S. is within sight of Park City. We help keep people alive in the mountains by providing up-to-date avalanche forecasts and education. The Utah Avalanche Center is a collaborative effort between the U.S Forest Service and the non-profit Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center and we depend on private donations to fund the daily avalanche advisory and education programs.
Education and awareness are the most effective means of staying safe in avalanche terrain. Utahns benefit from understanding the basics of avalanche danger, just as Hawaiians are taught the basics of rip tides and surf safety. Our Know Before You Go program is designed to make inexperienced young adults aware of avalanche danger outside of resort boundaries. This free program was presented 24 times to 1,044 people in Park City and the surrounding area last winter and deserves much of the credit for the declining avalanche fatality rate in Utah.
