Students/Alumni/Faculty/Staff at the UMHS take initiative to provide aid to Earthquake and Tsunami Victims in Japan

As seen in the news all around the world, on March 11, 2011, Japan was hit by the largest recorded earthquake in its history, registering 9.0 on the Richter scale. The earthquake then caused a tsunami of over thirty feet in size that destroyed entire cities in Northern Japan.

The number of individuals confirmed dead is expected to rise to over 10,000, with over 9,000 currently missing. More than half a million people have been forced from their homes into makeshift shelters with limited food, water and heat. In addition, continual aftershocks and potential exposure to radiation from several damaged nuclear reactors are the fearful realities the entire country must face.

Peace Winds Japan has already set up initial operations in Kesennuma and is now delivering food, water and blankets to various shelters. Funds collected though this site will be used to aid recovery of this devastated city. Detailed usage of collected funds will be determined as needs become clearer, and all the donations made through this site will primarily be transferred to Peace Winds Japan.
